At first glance Catherine of Siena appears rather meek and timid. She cuts a petite, slender, and altogether unimposing figure. It seems almost inconceivable that this delicate little woman should become one of the major beacons of hope.
Bridget of Sweden, Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Ávila are strong personalities who consistently swam against the current of their times. They were not afraid even of standing up to Popes to whom they occasionally sent extremely strong letters of rebuke. In its time, this was quite a sensation. But for me the really remarkable thing about all of this is that it was a pope who named these three critical women as Patronesses of Europe.
